Founded in 1896, West End Lumber is Cleveland's oldest lumber and building materials supplier. West End is proud to have been the first lumberyard to have offered hardware along with lumber at the turn of the last century and today to be one of the first to offer a wide range of unique lifestyle enhancing products through its website.
West End lumber was started by a Prussian emigrant named Louis Kopitske on what was then Cleveland's West End. Today's busy Lorain Avenue was then a dirt road from the intersection of W73rd (then called Chestnut Ridge Rd) where West End Lumber is located. West End Lumber grew rapidly along with the city of Cleveland. In 1917 the business was purchased by J. Warren Coleman from the widow of Kopitske, who had died in the worldwide flu epidemic of the same year.
Coleman expanded the offering of hardware and building products as well as adding three additional locations. He was joined by his son, Warren Coleman and his son-in-law, James Bender during the 1940's. The business continued to thrive throughout the 50's and 60's. Today, West End lumber continues to be owned and managed by the members of the Coleman family with Warren Coleman Jr. and Kraig McConnell running day-to-day operations.
When the family took over the operations in 1917,
lumber was delivered via horse and buggy.
